Royal Ulster Premier Beef and Lamb Championships 2018

27th November 2018

Report by Anne Morrison

The Old Allam’s Christmas Sale found it’s new home this year at the RUAS. Now known as the Royal Ulster Premier Beef and Lamb Championships, it did not disappoint in the new Logan Hall at the Eikon Centre. A few teething problems maybe, like the lack of seating around the Sale Ring but hopefully the RUAS will take this on board for next year as people do like a place to sit down to watch the Auction.

The British Blues excelled and for me it was a joy as they have come a long way from humble beginnings more than thirty years ago. The Supreme Champion and Reserve, although sired by Limousin, both had BB X dams, lovely smooth black heifers and a credit to all. But it was the British Blue Champion that took the highest price of the day going as a breeding heifer to Mr Stuart Perkins from Bath in Somerset. She was a homebred heifer, one of a flush of super cattle from Mr Robert Miller, Moneymore, Co.Londonderry, her dam being She’s a Diamond and Sire Imperial. A steer from this flush also took the Ulster Housewife’s Choice and made £2500.

Reserve British Blue went to Mr Ian McCaughern, another well know exhibitor of beef cattle and Beltex sheep from Rasharkin, Ballymena, Co.Antrim. His heifer was yet another BBxLim. All in all it was a fantastic day for Blues.
