Show Champion – a British Blue Heifer from JA & IE Knowles, Lowgill £1020 purchased by J Mellin, Long Preston

Reserve Champion – a British Blue Bullock from GE Jackson, Bentham £900 purchased by JE & G Burrow, Skipton

A great day for “Blues” – out of the 16 prizewinners on the day, 12 of these were “British Blue X”

Barbers Auctions, Market Drayton

Monday 8th February – the export section saw a fantastic array of suckler cows, predominantly numbered by British Blues. These topped out at 160p, for a cow weighing 844 kilo’s, to realize £1,350.40 for Messrs. Whieldon Bros, Hollington.

Mr. Simon Hamplett, Haughton had a fantastic “Blue” @ 146.5p and Mr. Graham Brindley had a cow @ 153p

Wednesday 20th February – out of an entry of 113 bulls, heavies stole the show, at 192p per kilo, for a British Blue weighing 632kilo’s to gross £1, 213.44 for Mr. Ian Wilson of Tean.

On the same day, 74 heifers were forward, again heavies raced away to a very impressive 178.5p for a British Blue weighing in at 554kilos to return £988.89 for Mr. Graham Jones, Hadnall

In the calf section, they climbed to a top price of £285, for an impressive British Blue calf, forward by Mr. A H Vernon, Whitgreave.

Heifers raced away to £194 for a British Blue from Mr. R E Jenks, Balterley

On 3rd March, 94 bulls were forward, with mediums getting the checkered flag by a whisker, at 1.54p per kilo, for a British Blue weighing in at 496 kilos, to realize £763.84, from Whieldon Bros.

Further British Blues tied at 154p, to gross £742.28

80 steers were forward, with heavies peaking at a staggering 160p per kilo, for a British Blue weighing in at 630kilos, returning at £1008 for Whieldon Bros.

234 calves were forward, with trade climbing to a top price of £272 for a top quality British Blue, from Messrs. GA Hargreaves & Sons, Cresswell

Heifers had a cracking trade, also achieving a top price of £220 for a British Blue from Mr. RE Jenks, Balterley.

There was a good show of over 35 entries. Judge, Mr. John Gulliver gave the championship to Andrew Geary, Chairman of the British Blue Central Club, with a British Blue steer, at 637 kilo’s, which sold at 1.80p, to the judge, on behalf of ABP. In class 8, the first prize ticket went to AG Sharman & Son, with a Blue steer, at 690 kilo’s, which sold at 1.29p. Nick Sansom won class 9, with a Blue heifer at 483 kilos @ 1.37p.

Southwest Belgian Blue Club Charity Effort

The Southwest Belgian Blue Club have raised £406 at the Royal Cornwall Show 2007, for the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

The money was raised through a “Guess the combined weight” competition, for a 16month old twin heifer & steer, exhibited on the Society stand.

The combined weight being 1060kilo’s and the first prize of £50 going to Mr. Pengelley who farms at Looe. The runner up and winner of £25 was Andrew Guy who guessed just 2 kilo’s above of 1062kilo’s.

This is a sterling effort for a very worthwhile cause!

£428 tops Gisburn Calf Show & Sale

The anniversary show and sale of rearing calves, at Gisburn Auction Marts, on Thursday 24 May 2007, saw all previous market record calf prices smashed, with a top price of £428 being achieved. [more]
