Blues Top 11,000gns at Borderway with a 68% Clearance

There was a warm buzz around Borderway Mart on Friday 25th January, for the first British Blue Sale of 2013 and inspite of the raw cold and a forecast of snow; it did nothing to dampen the keen interest from buyers.

The Judge, John O’Kell, Birdswood Farm, Aston, Runcorn, Cheshire, put up Solway View Flying Colours ET, bred & exhibited by Kevin Watret, Annan, as his Male and Supreme Champion. This black & white son of Colos Van Daisel was out of a Tamhorn Sumo daughter, Springfield Carissa; it also being in the top 30% of the breed for Eye Muscle Area and Retail Meat Yield, was knocked down at 11,000gns to Monzie Farms, Crieff, Perthshire.

The Reserve Male and Reserve Supreme Championship going to Highridge Blues Galaxy ET, bred & exhibited by Jeff & Lorraine Dunn, Okehampton, Devon. This mostly black bull was sired by Bringlee Blackstar, out of Pendle Dazzle. Again a bull in the top 30% for Eye Muscle Area, finding a new home at 6,200gns, with RD Atkinson, Goole, North Humberside.

The Female Championship was awarded to Overton Fifi ET, an April 2010 born black and white daughter of Dartagnan Du Castillon, out of a Gitan Du P’Tit Mayeur daughter, Annanwater Chantel ET, bred by Mrs. S Kennedy, Overton Farm, Ayr. Fifi found a new home with JE Lancaster, Sandford, Appleby at 2,500gns.

The Reserve Female Championship went to Greystone Gem from J & E Coates. This mostly black daughter of Newton Blues Chico left the ring unsold.

Other class winners being Ridge Dean Grouse ET, from Michele Wilde, Leighton Buzzard, a February 2011 born son of the popular Bluegrass Cyclone, out of a Ridge Dean Valentine daughter Ridge Dean Della; being at the very top of the breed for Eye Muscle Area, Carcass Weight and Retail Meat Yield and also above breed average for 400-day weight. He found a new home at 4,600gns (with a bottle of Black Grouse whisky) to Ian & Alan Hunter, Dalchirla Farm, Crieff, Perthshire.

The winner of class 4 was Lukeroyal Graffiti ET from Mel & Dianne Lucas, a black and white son of Serum D’Anloy out of the Twyning Ash Vaughan daughter, Lukeroyal Blondie ET. Again, a bull in the top 20% of the breed for Eye Muscle Area, he left the ring unsold.

Two leading price runner’s up being Osborne Flash a black & white son of Empire D’Ochain, out of the Gitan Du P’Tit Mayeur daughter Osborne Bramble, bred and exhibited by JE Twentyman, Wigton. He found a new home with RA & BEC Allison, Kirkfieldbank, Lanark at 6,500gns.

Also at 6,500gns was Lukeroyal Google ET, an all black son of Bringlee Carlos out of Lukeroyal Duchess, from Mel & Dianne Lucas. Google is in the top 5% of the breed for intramuscular fat and has above breed average weight figures, was sold to D & E Broadbent, Luddendenfoot, Halifax.

Droit Geronimo ET, a February 2011 born bull from Richard Mowbray, being in the top 10% of the breed for 600-day weight, Carcass Weight, Carcass Yield Index and Pedigree Breeding Index, out of Droit Dakota, by Dafydd D’Ochain was sold for 6,200gns to C & JM Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm, Barnard Castle.

From the same stable and the same way bred was Droit Gerry ET, a February 2011 born bull, again in the top 10% of the breed for 600-day weight, Carcass Weight, Carcass Yield Index and Pedigree Breeding Index. He was sold to Messrs. Metcalfe, Edenhall, Penrith, at 4,500gns.

Auctioneer, David Thomlinson commented “Bull’s well suited to the commercial customer were in strong demand and easy to sell!”

Of the 11 animals not sold through the ring, 10 were not backed up with recorded figures; with recorded bulls have an 854gns price advantage over those offered with no figures. There being a 68% clearance.
