Springhill is 2016 BIMEDA British Blue Herd Winners

The Northern Ireland Blue Cattle Club held their Annual Herd Competition recently and was delighted to have BIMEDA UK as their sponsors.

The results were presented at Ballynahinch Rugby Club. The competition judge was Alan Cleland from Downpatrick who judged in two herd categories: large and small along with individual awards for Best Brood Cow, Best Bull, Best Heifer and Best Calf.

Bimeda UK representative, Kevin McAnenly was on hand to present the prizes and congratulate the winners.

Best Brood Cow was Springhill Golden Girl owned by J&S Martin, Newtownards with Greenfield Ellie Mae owned by Basil Dougherty, Kircubbin and Woodview Eunice owned by Johnny Young, Ballynahinch taking second and third places.

Best Bull was Springhill Kojak owned by J&S Martin, Newtownards with Greenfield Joker owned by Basil Dougherty, Kircubbin and Chatham Jethro owned by JM Morrison & Son, Armoy taking second and third places.

Alan acknowledged the heifer section had very strong competition before presented his results. Best Heifer was Drumboy Jessie owned by Oliver McCann, Castlewellan with Springhill Kosher owned by J&S Martin, Newtownards and Rahoon Isabella owned by Sam Robinson & Sons, Crossgar taking second and third places.

Best Calf was Springbank Luna owned by Corrina and Ivan Gordon, Kilkeel with Rostrevor Kate owned by Martin McGinn Farming, Rostrevor and Drumboy Ladybird owned by Oliver McCann, Castlewellan taking second and third places.

The Small herd winner was the Greenfield Herd owned by Basil Dougherty from Kircubbin followed by the Springbank Herd owned by Corrina & Ivan Gordon from Kilkeel and the Drumboy Herd owned by Oliver McCann from Castlewellan.

The Large herd winner was the Springhill Herd owned by J&S Martin from Newtownards followed by the Chatham Herd owned by JM Morrison & Son from Armoy.

Overall Best Herd was awarded to the Springhill Herd owned by J&S Martin from Newtownards with reserve going to the Greenfield Herd owned by Basil Dougherty from Kircubbin.

Alan and his wife Liz thoroughly enjoyed visiting the competing herds and thanked everyone for their hospitality along the way. He was greatly impressed with the British Blue animals on show and said ‘I saw a lot of good pedigree herds in the making”. Alan also acknowledged seeing some great crossbred animals during his visits including an excellent crossbred blue calf at the Breezehill Herd owned by Isaac Ward, Crumlin.

Jason Edgar the NI Blue Cattle Club Chairman concluded the formalities with thanking the sponsors Bimeda UK for their support, the judge Alan for his assistance, and Ballynahinch Rugby Club for the venue.
