Great Yorkshire Show 2023

It was Solway View Rhubarb’s turn to shine at the Great Yorkshire Show on Wednesday, 12 July, when she scooped the Female Championship before going on to stand Supreme Champion for her breeder, Kevin Watret.
Supreme Champion - Solway View Rhubarb
The breeding of this rising two-year-old needs little introduction as her sire is the 27,000gns Solway View Odin sold in 2021 while her dam is a firm herd favourite in the shape of Solway View Milly, an Empire D’Ochain daughter that claimed the Championship at the Royal Highland and Royal Welsh shows in 2019 before going on to produce the breed record holder, the 32,000gns Solway View Rafa, and the joint female record price maker, Solway View Ria, both of which sold in May.
“She’s a fantastic heifer and a real credit to the breed – she moves well, has fantastic shape and muscle and is just perfect,” commented the judge, Andrew Haste, of the Stoneleigh herd.
Rhubarb has had a successful showing career so far, standing first at the Borderway AgriExpo last year as well as Blue Champion and Reserve Inter-breed at LiveScot.
Reserve Supreme Champion - Moorsley Sherry
Females were the flavour of the day as Moorsley Sherry, an all white 14-month-old heifer from Paul and Katie Brennan as well as sons, Thomas and Michael, followed Rhubarb through to stand Reserve Female and Reserve Supreme. This Reserve Junior Female from the Stars of the Future is by Bouchon De Beauffaux and out of Moorsley Hattie, an Affute Du Ry Ossogne daughter.
Rhubarb and Sherry also went on to stand Junior Champion and Reserve, respectively.
Male Champion - Topgun Splash
Among the males it was Ali Jackson’s Champion from the Highland Show, 14-month-old Topgun Splash, that claimed the top ticket. Bred from Ali and wife, Hannah’s wedding present, Solway View Oesha, he is by Engin D Hontoir.
Reserve Male Champion Top Side Sancho
The second prize winner from the same class, Ross and Elaine Pattinson’s Naby Golddust-sired Top Side Sancho, was Reserve Male. Born in September, 2022, he is out of the noted show and brood cow, Top Side Isla.
The team from Coul Estate won both the Group of Three and Pairs classes.
Other prize winners included JG Gill’s Hallfield Mojo and Coul Estate’s Solway View Pixie.
On the Thursday there was Inter-breed success for the Blue teams as they claimed the Inter-breed Group of Three and stood Reserve in Blythewood Continental Beef Pairs.
