North West Open Calf Show 2007MONDAY FEBRUARY 5th 2007 ALL SMILES FOR A ‘BABY BLUES’ DAY AT CHELFORD The North West Club of the British Blue Cattle Society held a ‘baby blues’ day with two events at Chelford Agricultural Centre on Monday 5th February 2007 by kind permission of Frank R Marshall & Co. The Dairy Calf event, open to calves under 6 weeks of age, sired by a Belgian Blue Bull out of a cow from a dairy herd, was held by the club as one of this year’s celebrations commemorating the 25th Anniversary in 2007 of the Society’s inauguration. Of calves attending the market on the day 30% were sired by a Belgian Blue bull. The prizes of £50 cash for each of the top priced bull and heifer through the ring on the day were matched to the same value with a voucher for the purchase of Belgian Blue semen both prizes kindly sponsored by Chelford Farm Supplies Ltd and Genus ABS respectively. From an entry of 27 blue cross heifers the top price of £230 went to the Gleave family from Holmes Chapel, Cheshire for a calf sired by natural service from his stock bull Paulern Vernon who was purchased at a Society sale at Chelford in March 2005. He is a Jardinier De La Bonne Raie son out of Tamhorn Romany a Banquier Du Moulin Derbaix daughter. Out of an entry of 39 blue cross bulls two calves from the same vendor, David Wrench of Henbury, Macclesfield both AI’d by Bionique Et Du Pre Rosine, achieved the top price of £245. Mr Gleave is a regular visitor to the Society sales at Chelford and Mr Wrench stated that as he was coming to the end of his Bionique straws he was as yet undecided whether to source another easy calving AI blue or purchase his own bull. Both vendors expressed their commitment to the continuing use of Belgian Blue bulls on their dairy herds.
The club’s pedigree calf show running alongside the dairy event was keenly contested by members throughout the North West with Judge Peter Whitlow, Warrington having well filled classes of competitors with top quality home bred calves. For the second year in succession the Champion Trophy, sponsored by Norbreck Genetics, and the Champion Female ticket went to the Springfield herd of Allan and Deirdre Wilkinson, Out Rawcliffe, Preston with their 13 months old heifer Springfield Bianca by Eclatant De La Sucrerie out of their renowned cow Springfield Pepsi. The Wilkinson’s also captured the Champion Male ticket with Springfield Buster an eight months old son of Wilson Ter Heiveld out of Springfield Vichy. Buster went on to take the reserve overall ticket. The male and female champion’s prizes were kindly sponsored by the local Wilmslow Branch of Lloyds TSB.
The senior bull class was won by Boomer Buster Rhymes a thirteen months old son of Sceptre De Bomal out of Idyle De Scy from the Birch family of Weston, Stafford. Placed second in the intermediate bull class, Mark and Elaine Hartley’s seven months old Pendle Bonanza, a Blue Stone Union Jack son out of their homebred cow Pendle Snowflake, went on to take the reserve champion male ticket. The junior bull class went to Graymar Bright Star a 5months old son of Three Ways Superstar out of Paulern Vala; he is the first homebred calf from new breeders Matthew Jones and family from Hadnall Shrewsbury. The Okell family from Runcorn, Cheshire took home the junior heifer ticket with their 7 months old Birdswood Bosside a Baroque De L’Ecluse daughter out of their homebred cow Birdswood Vision.
As always the 12 years and under Young Handler class was keenly contested by the club’s junior members and judge Kath Leivers, Sandbach Cheshire, was met with a class of very expectant young faces in charge of true to type well grown cattle. First in the class and champion was Isabella Hartley, Pendle, Lancashire leading Pendle Bonanza.
