North West Club Calf Show 2011
3rd SEPTEMBER 2011 – CHELFORD AGRICULTURAL CENTRE The North West Club held their annual open calf show at Chelford on the 3rd September by kind permission of Frank Marshall & Co. and we were privileged to receive support from eleven other generous sponsors, BBG-UK, Blue Merle, BOCM Pauls, Carrs Billington Agricultural, Celltech Embryo Transfer, Embryonics, IAE, Lambert Leonard and May, Norbreck Genetics not forgetting John Bowyer and Family and former club member Billy Frith. Forty-six calves from sixteen individual herds were entered in the classes for homebred calves 12 months of age and under. Show judge Jonathan Bellas, Appleby, Cumbria had the task of placing the exhibits in classes that were full of quality calves in very even age groups. He made his Female and Overall Champion Tamhorn Finola a nine months old all white heifer calf by Sjaka Zoeloe Van Zwaanhof out of Gregmaur Brandy led by Roma Wyllie. Gregmaur Brandy also produced last year’s calf show Male Champion. Tamhorn Finola appears set to make a big impact for the Tamhorn herd if she continues on to next year’s show circuit.
The Overall Reserve and Male Championship was awarded to Adam Neachells’ Cromwell Goliath a seven months old son of Bringlee Carlos out of Ridge Dean Rita. The Reserve Male Championship went to Chardaney Fabio an elven months old son of Empire D’Ochain out of Boothlow Tina from Paul Mycock.
The Reserve Female ticket went to Newpole Felicity a twelve months old daughter of Graphite De Dessous La Ville out of Tamhorn Charlotte from Phil White and Jules Turner who had travelled a long distance to join us.
We are very proud of our Junior Members and were very fortunate to have eight young handlers forward in their class. A decision was made to split this class and the Okell brothers; the Wilson sisters and guest Jack Bodily battled it out for the winners spot in the first section. Thomas Okell came out in front with Molly Wilson, Jack Bodily, Emily Wilson and Edward Okell not far behind. Well done to these blossoming showmen all 12 years of age and under. In the older section Roma Wyllie took the red rosette, it is hard to believe that her first show was only last year at the 2010 calf show, with Isabella and Thomas Hartley just a hairsbreadth behind. All these young people are very keen and capable and our Breed and Club look to be in good hands in the future.
The Overall Champion, in addition to the prize money and Club Shield sponsored by Norbreck Genetics, also received a special prize donated by Lambert Leonard and May of a free flush and freeze. Blue Merle donated 2 x 2.5litres of Liquid Multi Vitamin and it was decided that the names of all exhibitors with forward entries would be put into a ‘hat’ and the first two names pulled out would receive the prizes. Jonathan Bellas duly pulled out the names of John Okell and Adam Neachell. John Okell (Chairman) thanked Jonathan Bellas for his long journey to judge the show and the Llanymynach and Newpole herds for travelling a long distance to join us and take part on the day.
