Eighth Annual Open Calf Show


Wednesday 21st February 2007

The Border Belgian Blue Club staged their Eighth annual open calf show on Wednesday 21st February 2007 at Borderway Mart, Carlisle when nearly all of the 50 catalogued entries were forward for judging. This was made up of 24 males and 26 females all UK born pedigree registered calves born on or after 1st January 2006.

The club would like to thank the sponsors of this event, BBG, for supplying the semen vouchers, British Blue Cattle Society for the rosettes and championship sash, Harrison and Hetherington Ltd for the catalogue and the premises, Borderway Insurance Brokers for the championship prize money, Massey Bros. (Feeds) for the Perpetual Shield awarded to the champion calf and Norbreck Genetics for the Perpetual Shield for the winner of the young handler class.

The Judge Robert Johnston, (Vice-Chairman Northern Ireland Belgian Blue Club) 11 Carol Hill Gardens, Belfast had the very difficult task of judging the calves. He commented that there was a tremendous show of calves and the top calves in every class were outstanding. The calves were superbly presented and once he got into his stride he thoroughly enjoyed himself.

The male championship was awarded to BK Ryder, Newton Farm, Moffat with Annanwater Brock ET a May 2006 son of Gitan Du P’Tit Mayeur (IS) and out of the Tamhorn Sheba flush.

The female and overall championship also went to BK Ryder with Annanwater Bina ET a May 2006 full ET sister of the aforementioned Annanwater Brock ET.

BK Ryder also took the reserve female & reserve overall championship with Annanwater Becka ET a May 2006 son of Serum D’Anloy (IS) and out the Tamhorn Romance. flush

Messrs AM & E Hartley, Parklands Bungalow, Roughlee, Nelson, Lancs won the reserve male championship with Pendle Bonanza a June 2006 son of Blue Stone Union Jack and out of their homebred cow Pendle Snowdrop (Blue Stone Union Jack was reserve senior male champion and sold for 6,500gns Carlisle May 2004, is by the noted Baron Du Bois Bauloye).

BK Ryder also won the Progeny group with two Gitan Du P’Tit daughters. The first was Annanwater Britney ET (3rd in her class) and the second Annanwater Black Beauty ET (3rd in her class).

The reserve progeny group went to two Blue Stone Union Jack bred calves shown by AM & E Hartley. The first was Pendle Bonanza (1st in his class & reserve male champion), and the second, a heifer, Pendle Beany a June 2006 born calf out of Pendle Robinea.

There were some very promising entrants in the young handler class. The judge awarded Isabella Hartley the championship award leading Pendle Bonanza and Phil Halhead presented the Norbreck Genetics perpetual shield to Isabella and her brother Thomas Hartley was runner up leading Pendle Bruce.

2nd & Reserve Male Champion Pendle Bonanza (AM & E Hartley);
3rd Springfield Buster (AJ & DA Wilkinson)
4th Pendle Bruce (AM & E Hartley).

Class 3) female born between 03.01.06 and 12.04.06:
1st Croftends Black Beauty ET (JE Bellas & Son);
2nd Valley Bluebell ET (Richard E Carruthers);
3rd Annanwater Britney ET (BK Ryder);
4th Pendle Beany (AM & E Hartley).

Class 4) female born between 07.05.06 and 21.09.06:
1st, Female & Overall Champion Annanwater Bina ET (BK Ryder);
2nd, Reserve Female & Reserve Overall Champion Annanwater Becka (BK Ryder);
3rd Annanwater Black Beauty (BK Ryder)
4th Annanwater Beonica ET (BK Ryder).

Class 5 Young Handler (aged 16 and under):
1st Isabella Hartley leading Pendle Bonanza;
2nd Thomas Hartley leading Pendle Bruce;
3rd Joshua Bellas leading Croftends Bruno ET;
4th Megan Boocock leading Edmonds Beauty.

Class 6 Progeny Group (2 animals by the same sire but out of different dams):
1st Annanwater Britney ET & Annanwater Black Beauty ET – 2 heifers sired by Gitan du P’Tit Mayeur (BK Ryder);
2nd Pendle Bonanza (male) and Pendle Beany (heifer) – sired by Blue Stone Union Jack (AM & E Hartley);
3rd Edmonds Beauty (female shown by G Boocock) and Oak Tree Blue Moon ET (female shown by JH Pedley) – sired by Blak Du Baty D’Eprave (IS).
