The first "Blue" sale of the year was held on 22nd January 2016 at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

Highest price of the day, 9,200gns was achieved twice. First in at 9,200gns was from Annan breeder Kevin Watret with his two year old blue and white bull Solway View Jasper; 2nd in his class, he is a half-brother to last year’s Royal Highland Champion. Jasper was sired by Solway View Firecracker, himself a Gitan Du P’Tit Mayeur son and out of a home-bred, Norbreck Genetics sire, Heros Du Peroy dam, Solway View First Class. He finds a new home with J.W. Dent and Sons, Barnard Castle.

The second bull to achieve 9,200gns was Littlebank Jimmy, a blue and white son of Norbreck Genetics sire, Empire D’Ochain, from Messrs. Maudsley, Settle. Another 2nd prize winner, Jimmy was again out of a Heros Du Peroy dam, Littlebank Gorgeous. Successful purchasers were A & R Paton, Easter Greenhill, Falkirk.

There were also two bids of 7,500gns, the first for Brennand Jack, a mainly black, February 2014 born son of Norbreck Genetics sire, Bluegrass Cyclone, from J.C. Walker and Son, Dunsop Bridge. Out of the home-bred cow, Brennand Black Beauty, Jack went in a two-way split to G.A, and D.E. Thompson, Alston, Cumbria, and W.D. and B. Thompson, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.

At the same price was the successful show-winning, Tanat Jasper from WR & WW Jones, Oswestry, Shropshire. Standing 2nd in his class, this black and white son of the Genus sire, Adajio De Bray and out of Ridge Dean Emily, a Bringlee Volkawagon daughter, was purchased by Rodney Bros Plant Hire, Ripon.

Selling at 7,000gns, was the black and white, first-prize class winner and Reserve Male Champion, Brownridge Blues Jackpot, from DJ & B Spours, Belford, Northumberland. Jackpot has already had a successful show career, having won the Great Yorkshire Male Championship last year. He was sired by the Reinbeck Rubin son Newton Blues Elvis and out of College Valley Fame, a daughter of Empire D’Ochain. The successful purchaser was B.R. Fawcett, Bishopdale, Leyburn.

R.D. Atkinson, Goole, went to 5,400gns to secure the May 2014 born, black and white Greystone Junior, from Messrs Coates, Stainforth, Settle. Junior is from the first crop of calves by Almeley Ginola, the Coates’s new stock bull and out of the Newton Blues Chico daughter, Greystone Focus.

Also from the same stable and again, sired by Ginola, selling at 5,000gns was Greystone Joker, another May 2014-born black & white bull. This time out of an Adagio Du Stordeur daughter, Greystone Brandy. D Hood, Middlehill Farm, Glenclova, Angus was the successful purchaser.

Also selling at 5,000gns was the day’s Overall Male Champion Wilton Henry, from Oliver McGuinness, Co.Londonderry. Sired by the successful Baron/Sandy, Norbreck Genetics sire, Solway View Dynamite and out of the Empire D’Ochain daughter Bawnmore Eva, he sold to DB & ID Owen, Holyhead.

BLUE LADIES CLASSIC

Females in the Blue Ladies Classic sold to 3,800gns twice, for both the Champion and Reserve.

Standing Champion was Knockraven Jessie J, a February 2014 born black maiden heifer from Christopher McCrea, Strabane, Co. Tyrone. Out of the Empire daughter, Knockraven Gina, and sired again, by Heros Du Peroy, she sold to Messrs. Huck, Skipton, North Yorkshire.

Oliver McGuinness bought the reserve, a dark blue roan maiden heifer from Cornwall breeders, E.A. and D.A. Ellis. Trencrom Immie, a December 2013 daughter of Maidenlands Carlos and out of the Gitan sired cow, Paulern Deidre.

From the same home, Trencrom Jingo sold for 2,800gns. An April 2014 born daughter of the Harisson De Platte sired Rathlyon Felix and out of a Greystone Canon daughter, Penfro Freda, she finds a new home with A & J Phillips for their Balzer herd.

Recipients with ET calves sold to 4,200gns for an outfit from Oliver McGuinness. Faughanvale Kitty, a September 2015 born heifer, is full sister to the 2015 Balmoral Show Champion and sired by Solway View Dynamite. Successful purchaser was S Carr, Homilton Farm, Capheaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
