Chelford 2008Saturday 6th September
After all the tribulations caused by Bluetongue restrictions, the British Blue Society returned to its long-time home at Chelford, last Saturday, for the Annual Autumn Show & Sale. A highly successful two days showing and socialising culminating in a reasonably strong sale, with virtually a 100% clearance, generously sponsored by Farmers Guardian.
The high of the sale was the 9000gns top price paid for the October 2006 born heifer, “Gregmaur Brandy”, from Lutterworth, Leicestershire based Derek and Maureen Gregory, long term supporters of Chelford sales. The Reserve Female Champion heifer, by imported sire Gib Van Het Negenbond and out of the Hazelwood Freshman sired, Gregmaur Petra, a natural calving line and of high health status. She had attracted many admiring glances at the previous days show and several top breeders competed openly at sale time, before Auctioneer, Gwyn Williams knocked her down to a renowned breeder, who wishes his name to remain undisclosed at present. Derek and Maureen also received the “Clive Godden Perpetual Trophy” for the best homebred pedigree from the Central Region.
Brandy had been placed first in her class and Reserve Female Champion, at the previous days show, by Northern Ireland based judge, James Martin. Second in her class was the May 2006 born Cwm Betsan, presented by Arwel Wyn Owen from Anglesey. This Radar Van Terbeck daughter, out of Oxcroft Kimono, is an almost black heifer, again of high health status. She made 4,500 gns to Worcester based, new breeder, Andrew Bishop.
The Female Champion and Supreme Champion was Court Ursula, from Annan based Kevin Watret. By Vigoureux De St Fontaine and out of the Galopeur sired Ballyfin Rachel, she was sold, warranted in calf to Gitan Du P’Tit Mayeur and made 4,000 gns to Adam Neachell, Aldridge, Staffordshire, for his Cromwell Herd.
Demand for Bulls was mixed, with quality being highly sought after. The leading price of 5,400 gns was for Woodlands Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, put forward by Nicky Beardsley, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. This Netherwood Umpire son, out of Boston Favorette, had been winning shows all over the Midlands this summer and travelled home to Oxwich, on the Gower Coast near Swansea, with Messrs. EJ Smith & Sons.
The Belfield family from Buxton, Derbyshire, were awarded Male Champion
and Reserve Supreme, with their August ’06 born bull Boothlow
Big Lad. Big Lad, sired by As De Trefle Du Vanova, out of Boothlow
Rosie.
Commercial Cattle Top at £1900
Respected showman and cattle judge, David Hancock, Elton, Cheshire,
awarded Supreme Champion honours to Chelford regular, Nicky Beardsley,
with a fantastic steer, from her Woodlands Herd. P Allen made the long
journey from Melton Mowbray looking for a Christmas Show winner and
snapped it up for £1550.
