Belgian Blue takes Championship and Reserve at Kirkby Stephen Annual Prize Show and Sale of Suckled Calves

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd had forward 803 head of cattle at Kirkby Stephen Mart on Monday comprising 47 geld cows and 756 suckled calves for their great annual prize show and sale.

Cows were dearer than the previous sale topping at £932.10 or 119.5p/kg for a Belgian Blue from Messrs Balmer, Grassgill to average 69.12p/kg. The prize show and sale of suckled calves was kindly sponsored by J G Animal Health, Dugdale Nutrition, Novartis Animal Health and British Belgian Blue Cattle Society. The judging was carried out by Mr K Ludgate who made the following awards:-

A huge ringside of customers saw 68 different successful purchasers by the end of the sale to produce an average for all calves of £472.37 (+£46.74) on the year. (Bullocks £522.04 +£61.78, Heifers £416.02 +£18.39, Bulls £445.55 +£60.19)
