2013 Calf Show & Young Handler Competition

The Northern Ireland Blue Cattle Club held their 7th Annual Calf Show and Young Handler Competition on Saturday 3rd August at Downpatrick Co-Operative Mart where the venue and facilities was greatly appreciated.
CALF SHOW
Sponsored by Donnelly Group, the calf show attracts great support and enthusiasm from the competitors. The competition was open to calves registered from May 2012 with judging in the capable hands of the well-known Mr Alan Cleland from Ballee, Downpatrick. The bull classes were the first forward for judging.
Bull Class for 1-3 months winner was Magheradroll Isotope from sire Chatham Eclipse and dam Magheradroll Fluff, owned by Johnny Young, Ballynahinch.
Bull Class for 4-6 months winner was Ballykeel Imperial from sire Heros Du Peroy and dam Ballykeel Esther, owned by Daniel Rogers, Ballymartin.
Bull Class for 7-9 months winner was Springhill Harp from sire Kubit de Bray and dam Springhill Cranberry, owned by Martin Bros, Newtownards.
Bull Class for 10-12 months winner was Greenfield Harlequin from sire Nounours De Wihogne and dam Greenfield Cynthia, owned by Basil Dougherty, Kircubbin.
Bull Class for 13-15 months winner was Silverwood Hugo from sire Springbank Blackstar and dam Springbank Christmas owned by Colin McKnight, Newry.
From the 1st places winners, Alan chose Silverwood Hugo as his male champion with Ballykeel Imperial as his reserve male champion. Judging of the heifer classes then commenced.
Heifer Class for 4-6 months winner was Magheradroll Icicle from sire Springbank Blackstar and dam Magheradroll Eve, owned by Johnny Young,Ballynahinch.
Heifer Class for 7-9 months winner was Springbank Holly from sire Springbank Blackstar and dam Springbank Christmas, owned by Corrina and Ivan Gordon, Kilkeel.
Heifer Class for 13-15 months winner was Springhill Hannah from sire Dafydd D’Ochain and dam Springhill Winnie owned by Martin Bros, Newtownards.
From the 1st places heifer winners, Alan chose Springbank Holly as his female champion with Springhill Hannah as his reserve female champion.
Overall Champion was Springbank Holly owned by Corrina and Ivan Gordon from Kilkeel and Reserve Overall was Springhill Holly owned by Martin Bros of Newtownards.
The club chairman, Ivan Gordon thanked Alan for judging this event and presented him with a gift. He also thanked Donnelly Group for their sponsorship and concluded with thanks to the club members for their support.
YOUNG HANDLER COMPETITION
Following the calf show, the young handler competition took place with judging in the capable hands of Jim Sloan from Kilkeel. Kindly sponsored by Bank of Ireland, William Thompson was present to congratulate the winners. The competition was split into three different age groups for the young members to show their expertise and knowledge of their calves. The entrants proudly lead their calves round the ring and presented themselves to Jim for judging.
First place winner in age group 0-8 was Katie McCann from Castlewellen. First place in age group 9-12 was Katrina Killen from Crossgar. First place in age group 13-16 was Emily Martin from Newtownards. All entrants received a Northern Ireland Blue Cattle Club medal with plaques for the first place winners. The club chairman, Ivan Gordon thanked Jim for judging, Bank of Ireland for their sponsorship and all the young members for taking part.
The event concluded with a barbeque for all the participants and spectators giving everyone the chance to have some food and craic before heading home.
