Kirkby Stephen Store Cattle


A fantastic show of cattle with the quality being bad to beat was on offer at Kirkby Stephen’s annual May Day prize show and sale. Trade through the day from start to finish was tremendous with all vendors leaving the ring delighted. A huge ringside of buyers from throughout the country ensured that the overall average of £745.77 being identical to 2009 extreme rates, with 97 more cattle sold on the year.

The judge Mr Ian Wildgoose was delighted to have put in front of him 29 top quality cattle for him to judge. The overall championship was awarded to a superb British Blue Heifer consigned by Messrs Tiplady, Powis House, which later went on to realise £1,240 and was purchased By Messrs Wilcox of Wigan. Reserve champion was awarded to an excellent British Blue heifer consigned by Messrs Hayton, Asby grange which later went on to fetch £1,100 and sold to John Gray, Bridlington.

49 cast cow were submitted to the usual competitive ringside of prospective purchasers, the show comprised some terrific animals all were good to sell with prices being substantially dearer, The sale top price of the day being 149.50p/kg for an excellent British Blue consigned by Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, whilst the top price per head being 31008.79 for another British Blue consigned by Miss H Brown, Beechwood House. The overall average being £700 (102.37p/kg).
