Carlisle Continental Store CattleAt Carlisle on Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd March 2008, Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their annual spring two day show and sale of continental cross store cattle. A tremendous entry of 2,731 cattle were forward for sale. Over the two days an outstanding standard of quality cattle were onoffer to the biggest company of buyers seen in the north of England for some time. A total of 186 different purchasers were in attendance over the two days. Trade was said by many to be the dearest seen for some ten years breaking prices obtained in other Cumbrian centres at recent sales. The Friday sale saw 1,349 heifers forward for sale and all classes sold well, especially the flashy export types and heifers with breeding potential. An overall sale average of £719.26 for 1,349 heifers was obtained which is a rise of £91.58 on the year. The pre-sale show was judged by Alistair Vance of Whithorn who had 66 heifers in total to judge consigned by 24 difference vendors.
The reserve champion rosette went to Helen Claxton of Newton High House, Stocksfield for her British Blue cross heifer. This blue roan marked heifer was sired by an unregistered British blue bull and was purchased for £1,900 by Alan Hall of Preston Tilery Farm, Darlington. Heifer prize winners - Class 3 British Blue cross (haltered) 1st H Claxton, Newton High House, Stocksfield £1,900, 2nd AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, Great Asby £1,800, 3rd JC & SE Little, The Guards, Ireby £1,100. Class 4 British Blue cross 1st Bell Haas Grove, Haas Grove Farm, Leading Heifer Prices (all crosses) - British Blue £1900 Newton High House, £1800 Grange Hall, £1500, £1120, £1020 (x2), £1000, £980 Low House Farm, £1050 Prior House, £1000 Haggate Farm, £1000 Haas Grove Farm, £970 Inglewood Edge, £960 Setterah Park. The Saturday sale saw 1,382 steers forward for sale. This day was also a great success for all classes of steer with customers for all types, good, strong, and small. An overall average of £721.23 for 1,382 head achieved an increase of £53.21 on last year. The pre-sale show was judged by Paul Tippets of Shifnal, Shropshire and was again highly successful with 43 cattle out on parade.
Father and son, Colin and James Little of The Guards, Ireby collected the Championship award with their British Blue cross which was sired by the registered Blue bull Woldnewton Rambo and is out of a pedigree Limousin cow, a daughter of the noted Fanfaron sire. This black and white steer later sold for £1,500 and goes to SE Sellers of Green Top, Derbyshire.
